TMLC opened its doors in 2005 and has been proudly serving the local community ever since. TMLC is privately owned and operated by the Principal Lory Snow, an accredited Montessori teacher (TMI) with many years of teaching experience, a Certificate in Daycare Management and a B.A. in Sociology. She administers the program and lovingly oversees its daily operation.
Thornhill Montessori Learning Centre was established to educate children from 3 -5 years in a beautifully prepared Montessori environment, providing them with individual attention and personalized programs in a small, nurturing environment.
The goals of the school are to:
TMLC employs 2 teachers, one Montessori, and one assistant teacher. In addition, there are contract teachers for French, Music, and Gym.
The Montessori teacher is trained to ‘follow the child’ through careful observation, allowing each student to reveal strengths and weaknesses, interests and anxieties and then to implement strategies that work best to facilitate learning. She appeals to the intellectual powers and psychological characteristics of the child, to instil a love of learning. The primary role of the Montessori teacher is to prepare and maintain the physical, intellectual, and social/emotional environment within which the child works. The key aspect of this is the presentation of intriguing and developmentally appropriate opportunities for learning to meet the needs and interests of each child. The teacher challenges and sets high expectations for students based on their individual abilities and learning styles. Independent learning is encouraged and guidance and support are provided as needed or requested.
All teachers, both current and occasional supply teachers have up-to-date immunizations, first aid training including infant and child CPR and have undergone a Vulnerable Sector/Police Check at the time of hire.
